Why headlights get foggy and yellow

Modern headlights are made of polycarbonate plastic, not glass. From the factory they have a thin clear coat that protects them. Years of sun and UV, heat, road salt, and grime slowly break that coating down. The plastic underneath then oxidizes, and that is what turns it cloudy, yellow, and rough to the touch. It happens to every car eventually, and it only gets worse the longer it is left.

It fixes the problem without replacing the part

The lens itself is rarely the issue. The housing, the reflector, and the bulbs are usually fine, and only the outer surface has broken down. Replacement throws all of it away and starts over.
